Pacific Early Childhood Education Research Association – Hong Kong Chapter (PECERA-HK) and Chor Hang Education Research Institute (CHERI) are very pleased to be joint-organizing a public seminar on “Supporting Multilingualism in the Early Years” by Professor Stephanie Sanders-Smith.
While many local and international schools in Hong Kong provide dual language programmes emphasising English alongside of Cantonese or Mandarin, there has been little research that has explored how learning and language use takes shape within these schools, particularly within Early Childhood Educational contexts. There is even less research about dual language learning in programmes that also employ Progressive practices.
This presentation demonstrates how young learners in the Early Years programme at Yew Chung International School (YCIS) Hong Kong, a programme that adheres to an emergent curriculum and inquiry-based pedagogy, develop trilingualism through translingual communicative practices. The author will discuss what is meant by translingualism and translanguaging and how these practices are present in YCIS Early Years classrooms. Conditions for multilingual participation within one classroom will be highlighted, as well as how children within it negotiated peer relationships through linguistic improvisation and accommodation.
Stephanie C. Smith is Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on socio-cultural foundations and pedagogy in early childhood. Her research interests’ center on the connection between pedagogy and societal issues associated with race and class. Dr. Smith’s work focuses primarily on these connections in urban early childhood programs.
